Shooting In the Rain
After getting soaked at Winter Range and going through three days of rain in
the match, I thought of items and ideas that made my day much easier.
Things to think about:
- An umbrella or cart cover. I use an umbrella ($20 from Costco/Sams
Club), but a basic 30 gallon trash bag also covers my cart well.
- Hat cover. I like to think of them as hat condoms, but they work to
keep your hat and your head dry. Sabas carries these for $5 a pop, come
in various sizes.
- WD40. Spray it in your guns after your done shooting, before you
load up. Keeps the moisture out of the guns and the actions clean.
I had my '73 trigger assembly lock up completely by the last day because of
the rain and gunk that got into it. Thankfully, it didn't cost me any
stages, as I found this as I was unpacking my guns from the truck after the
match at home. I keep a very small can of it in my gun cart.
- Dry rags for wiping down the guns.
- A sandwich bag for the timer. Ziplocks work great, keeps all the
electronics dry and you can see the time through the bag.
- I use a rubberized floor mat in my Tahoe cargo area so I didn't load my
truck up with mud from the guncart wheels. A few trash bags cut open on
the floor or covering the wheels.
- Rain/dust proof gun socks. Redwing was selling these at the Winter
Range match, made of water-proof canvas. They work great for those windy
or rainy conditions to keep your guns clean between stages. It's a good
idea to use these during major matches, just as a precaution.
